Kilroy sightings
Europe and the South Pacific
The shipyard phrase became a traveling servicemen’s joke, crossing oceans and spreading through both major theaters of World War II.
Across Two Theaters
The U.S. Naval Institute account says servicemen who encountered James J. Kilroy’s inspection marks aboard ships picked up the phrase and spread it throughout Europe and the South Pacific. The National Park Service likewise describes the graffiti first in the Atlantic Theater and later in the Pacific Theater.
